Bathroom remodeling is perhaps the most challenging part of whole house remodeling, particularly because you won’t be able to use it for a few days. For homes with single bathrooms, renovations are downright difficult – but not impossible. If you happen to have such a home, here is our survival guide for renovating in single-bathroom homes.
Choose Your Contractor Carefully
The renovation process and timeline for this type of remodel will need to be different from typical renovations, as you don’t have a spare bathroom to utilize. Make it a point to choose a contractor that has the knowledge and experience to accommodate changes to the process, such as working in sections and removing the toilet and other fixtures only when needed.
This means you have to carefully screen your contractor and make the time and effort to check their background. A contractor with a history of project delays is definitely one you should avoid. Hiring a capable master bathroom remodeling contractor should take care of such problems.
Have a Plan B for Everything
Your bathroom renovation plan should cover all bathroom-related needs, with the assumption that the project may get delayed. Some of these “Plan B” scenarios include brushing your teeth at the kitchen sink, taking your morning shower at the gym (or at your workplace, if it has a shower room) or bathing the little kids in an inflatable pool (if the weather’s warm enough). Your friends or loved ones may also be able to help out by letting the kids stay at their place temporarily, and maybe even allowing you to use their bathroom if other options aren’t available.
Commit to the Project
Changes to a project are not uncommon, but they’re certainly something you want to avoid in the middle of a remodel. In addition to delays, changes can inflate the cost of the project. The contractor as well as the homeowner need to commit to the project as it was planned in the beginning.
