As remodelers, we sometimes hear clients talk about why they want to remodel. Sometimes they struggle with whether or not they’re launching into a remodeling project for the “right” reason. And because (besides the kitchen) the bathroom is the room that seems to bother homeowners most, we sometimes hear people wonder if they are doing a bathroom remodel for the right reason.
There’s no gentle way to put this: Sometimes a bathroom is just plain ugly! And that’s a legitimate reason for a bathroom remodel. Everybody who comes into your house see your guest bathroom if they are there for more than an hour. And everybody notices how your bathroom looks because—let’s be honest—there’s not a whole lot to do in that room. If you’re embarrassed to have guests go in your guest bathroom—it’s time to do something about it. It’s time to remodel the bathroom.
But the guest bath isn’t the only bathroom in the house. What about your master bathroom? Master baths have increasingly become a place to escape and relax. But if your master bathroom has a case of the screaming uglies, that’s hard to do.
Here’s something else to think about. The money you invest in a bathroom remodel provides you with a great payback when it’s time to resell your home. Bathrooms are one of the first things people notice when buying a home—and it can make or break a sale.
Of course, there are other reasons to remodel your bathroom. You may want to put in more efficient features such as water-saving toilets and showerheads. You may want to expand the room or reorganize it a bit so that it’s set up to better accommodate your lifestyle. Or you may have safety issues you’re concerned about. Those are all legitimate reasons to remodel. But don’t feel guilty about eliminating the ugly factor. It’s your home and you should feel good living in it.
